Genesis - The Carpet Crawlers

He returns from his mixed-up memories to the passage he was previously stuck in. This time he discovers a long carpeted corridor. There is lambswool under my naked feet. The wool is soft and warm,- gives off some kind of heat.A salamander scurries into flame to be destroyed.Imaginary creatures are trapped in birth on celluloid. The fleas cling to the golden fleece,Hoping they'll find peace. Each thought and gesture are caught in celluloid. There's no hiding in my memory. There's no room to avoid. The walls are painted in red ochre and are marked by strange insignia, some looking like a bulls-eye, others of birds and boats. Further down the corridor, he can see some people; all kneeling. With broken sighs and murmurs they struggle, in their slow motion to move towards a wooden door at the end. Having seen only the inanimate bodies in the Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging, Rael rushes to talk to them. The crawlers cover the floor in the red ochre corridor. For my second sight of people, they've more lifeblood than before. They're moving in time to a heavy wooden door,Where the needle's eye is winking, closing in on the poor. The carpet crawlers heed their callers:"We've got to get in to get outWe've got to get in to get outWe've got to get in to get out.""What's going on?" he cries to a muttering monk, who conceals a yawn and replies "It's a long time yet before the dawn." A sphinx-like crawler calls his name saying "Don't ask him, the monk is drunk. Each one of us is trying to reach the top of the stairs, a way out will await us there." Not asking how he can move freely, our hero goes boldly through the door. Behind a table loaded with food, is a spiral staircase going up into the ceiling. There's only one direction in the faces that I see; It's upward to the ceiling, where the chamber's said to be.Like the forest fight for sunlight, that takes root in every tree. They are pulled up by the magnet, believing they're free. The carpet crawlers heed their callers:"We've got to get in to get outWe've got to get in to get outWe've got to get in to get out."Mild mannered supermen are held in kryptonite,And the wise and foolish virgins giggle with their bodies glowingbright.Through THE door a harvest feast is lit by candlelight; It's the bottom of a staircase that spirals out of sight. The carpet crawlers heed their callers:"We've got to get in to get outWe've got to get in to get outWe've got to get in to get out."The porcelain mannikin with shattered skin fears attack. The eager pack lift up their pitchers - they carry all they lack. The liquid has congealed, which has seeped out through the crack,And the tickler takes his stickleback. The carpet crawlers heed their callers:"We've got to get in to get outWe've got to get in to get outWe've got to get in to get out."

Always and forever, thank you to Great Britain and the British people whose creativity, since the 1960s, has given the rest of the World hundreds of unique bands such as the Genesis and music of unparalleled beauty, quirkiness and atmosphere. What would our lives have been without British bands? Thank you from Sicily.

I saw this show in 1975 in Montreal. Me and a buddy bought a bus package from Ottawa. We thought it would be a good idea to take some window pane when we got on the bus to Montreal. And it was. Genesis on lsd was fantastic.

This is a very beautiful song. I love Gabriel's voice and all the musical details. Pay attention to Collins drumplay in the background. Allmost concealed but still carrying the whole song like a wave of drums. Excellent!!!
Ignacio Carollo
Lamb is the most complete album I've ever heard and seen. My dad introduced me into it when I was 14 years old. I'm 27 actually and I'm here alone like an idiot reading the lyrics and wondering and crying like the same kid I was 10 years ago. Absolutely brilliant masterpiece.
Jade Shannon

Jarrod Lacy
Brilliant, poetic. Enthralling jam.
Jeffrey Lange
This hole song is one big crescendo from start to finish. Led by Peters emotion filled vocals and haunting lyrics. Every member of the band is the best at what they do. This is one of many excellent songs of Peter Gabriels Genesis. I'm not trying to take anything away from Phil. But this is my Genesis.
Jeremy parker

I chose this song to play at my dads cremation as the curtains started to close, We was not close and did'nt have much in common but what we did have in common was music his taste rubbed off on me on car journeys and playing music at home.. I still listen to all the early Genesis and various other 70's Prog rock bands.. For that I thank you Dad R.I.P

Wishing I was alive in the 70s...I'm only 15 and was introduced to this band by my dad. Genesis is my favorite band of all time.
Ramon Nunez
Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel almost have the same voice! They make a great power harmony.
Robert Letchworth
I don't typically care for Genesis, but my god, this song does things to me. Especially the chorus. Whether it's Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins harmonizing or that Celtic-sounding flute coming in when the chord changes from the minor 3rd to the major 5th, something about this song makes it absolutely heavenly.
Ronald Neves
It was 1978 or 79. I was having dinner with a girlfriend, in Cascais, Portugal, when they played Carpet Crawlers. Something very unusual happened. The whole restaurant began singing along. It was great.

I remember hearing this song for the first time last week after taking 10 hits of Lsd and I've never experienced such epic/intense magic before.. my reality literally dissolved and was replaced with a world made of light and sacred geometry. if it wasn't for my good friend and this song I would have lost my mind.. \nmy life is forever changed
William Larkin
This takes me back to when I was just married in the early 70s, living in a dingy flat in Melbourne, and living in bliss listening to music like this. Life has been very, very good since, but it's hard to beat those days.
Yankarlo Santiago
It's like a sonic painting... it's incredile what this guys used to do!
aaron kramer
What a majestic beautiful piece of music from Genesis!
I don't think this was merely written by Gabriel. It couldn't have been. See, the spiritual gravitas that this song beholds and the emotions it invokes can only mean one thing, that this song, from somewhere in the ether, found him. It is utterly perfect.
b zanon
this album and pink floyd's dark side of the moon are the 2 best rock albums ever made...\ntrue masterpieces...
I remember being maybe 9 or 10 years old, pulling out this album from my older brothers collection & thinking how the album told a story was such genius.  It was the very beginning of my undying love for music...

One of the greatest headphone albums ever, a stunning though difficult work, but a work of genius none the less, it;s as fresh today as all those years ago when i first bought that lovely double vinyl.
